The Congregational Church of St. George (Đorđe) is an Orthodox church situated in the hear of the town center, in Pašićeva Street. Bishop's castle, the building of Bačka Eparchy, Platoneum, and the first Serbian grammar High-school “Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj”are nest to the church. The congregational temple of Novi Sad is dedicated to the great martyr St. George. Today's temple was built where an older one, from 1734. used to be, but it had burnt down in the bombardment in 1848/49. The reconstruction was done according to the plan of architect Gustav Saiba.
The second great reconstruction of the temple lasted from 1902. until 1905. according to the plan of architect from Budapest, Mihail Harminc. A beautiful tall tower was built then with a clock on all four sides, and four bells inside the tower.
Inside the temple there are 33 icons in the iconostasis, historic paintings above both choir stalls, and two big icons on the thrones, painted by a Serbian academic painter Paja Jovanović. These icons are considered the best of his church paintings. Other murals are the work of Stevan Aleksić, and the stained glass windows were done by Imre Zeler, according to the sketchers of Paja Jovanović. The wood for the iconostasis was brought from Holly Mountain.
